Colleague Development Day One: Detroit is Our Home and Not Our Laboratory

Date/Time:
January 3, 2023, 8:30 AM

Presented by Dan Pitera and Sarida Scott

It is clear that Detroit has been of interest—both positive and negative—to the world for decades. Scholars have come from all over the world to study the unique conditions posed by Detroit’s urban context. As eyes continue to focus on Detroit from every angle, the University of Detroit Mercy has been one of the key institutions at this nexus. What does today look like and more importantly how are we moving into the future that develops a just, ecological, and inspiring city for existing residents and newcomers as well?

Learning objectives:

This session will:

  1. Provide an increased awareness of the Detroit community development history and implications for the future.
  2. Consider the University’s role at both the neighborhood and city scale in moving into the future.
  3. Lead attendees to better understand SACD’s approach to working with and engaging the Detroit community.
