Session Description: In the last few months, numerous articles and media discussions have speculated on the societal effects of artificial intelligence. The release and rising popularity of ChatGPT-3, an AI tool that can be tasked with writing essays and answering homework questions, has put educators on alert.

While some brace for a host of negative outcomes relating to student use of such technologies, others seek innovative modes of using AI in the classroom and in other areas of their professional roles.

In this special roundtable discussion facilitated and hosted by the CETL, three Detroit Mercy faculty including Dr. Diego Arias (Assistant Professor of Management, Business Ethics), Dr. Elena Garcia (Writing Program Director, Assistant Professor of English), and Dr. Phillip Olla (Associate Professor, Health Services Administration) will discuss what they think the emergence of AI means to their field and hypothesize it will impact teaching and learning.

CETL Director Dr. Mike Verdusco will introduce the discussion and serve as panel moderator. The session will begin by offering some definitions of AI before moving into a more nuanced discussion of its possible impacts (both positive and negative) on higher education.
