Location:

Session Description: How many times have you left a keynote on fire with great ideas, inspired to go out and make a difference, and then suddenly. . . wait, what do I actually do now? That is the goal of this talk: practical steps to help you figure out how to make alternative grading work for you. You will learn about what works in alternatively graded classes, how to adjust those things to fit your circumstances, where to find resources that can guide you, and frameworks to help you make decisions when the unexpected happens.

David Clark is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mathematics at Grand Valley State University. Over his 17-year teaching career, David has become a leading proponent of student-centered grading and assessment practices in higher education. He uses active and inquiry-based methods as a classroom teacher and has won numerous teaching awards, including the Mathematical Association of America’s National Alder Award. His research also centers on students, especially projects that introduce them to mathematical research through puzzles and games. His book, Grading for Growth, is available from Stylus. David is an avid photographer, backpacker, gardener, and boardgamer (although he usually loses).
