The Mid-Semester Assessment of Teaching Program is offered by the Center for Excellence in Teaching & Learning (CETL) is an excellent opportunity for reflection as we move into the second half of each semester. The process will provide faculty the means to review and revise their course practices as needed based on anonymous student feedback prior to the semester’s end. This low impact process can provide valuable insight when most useful.
Time Requirements – The process will begin with a faculty consultation with the CETL to plan and build an appropriate survey. This process will take approximately one hour. After the survey results have been collated and interpreted, faculty and CETL staff will engage in a post-survey consultation for approximately 1 to 1.5 hours.
Feedback – The results of the assessment are confidential. Faculty may request a letter of participation for their promotion and tenure portfolio.
MAT Process
Select the Instrument – Faculty can choose a specific area of focus for an anonymous student assessment of teaching int the following areas:
- Assessments
- Classroom Culture
- Course Organization and Design
- Discussion
- Holistic
- Learning Materials/Curriculum
- Problem-Solving
- Student Experience and Belonging
If faculty have an area of interest not on this list, the CETL will develop a survey instrument based on this area. Our recommendation is to choose one area of focus and the CETL will help you to develop a tailored instrument, which can consist of up to 5 structured questions and 2 open-ended questions.
Data Collection – After consulting with the faculty, the CETL staff will build a five to seven question electronic survey and deploy the survey (through the Lime Survey interface) to the selected course or courses. The CETL staff will collate the data and provide a narrative report to the faculty (minimum number of student responses = 5).
Review Results – The process will conclude with a consultation between faculty and CETL staff to interpret the data and to steps to revise/augment the course accordingly for the second half of the class.
