Session Description: Three recent Fulbright Hays Group Projects Abroad to Brazil, focusing on African Continuities in the Northeast region, have engaged Detroit Mercy faculty and administrators across disciplines in study about the Afro-Brazilian diaspora, including artistic representations, ethnic and racial affirmation, discourses of harmony and confrontation, and voices of presence and memory. Visits to Quilombo communities elucidated land rights struggles and underscored how ancestral memory works as a form of resistance that helps strengthen communities under threat. Awardees share curriculum projects and scholarly works created that speak to their disciplines, enhance teaching and learning, and internationalize programming in meaningful ways.
